More Transparency from Democrats

Senator Roland Burris (D-IL) – Lying Under Oath

The Senate Ethics Committee launched an investigation into Burris on February 17, 2009, for repeatedly altering his statements regarding his appointment to the Senate and his contacts with Gov. Blagojevich and the governor’s associates. Burris was elevated to the Senate seat by the governor on December 30, 2008. When questions were raised about the appointment, Sen. Burris proclaimed, “I don’t have any taint from Governor Blagojevich.” Over the next several months, Burris offered at least three different explanations under oath of how he came to be appointed to the Senate.

Representative Charlie Rangel (D-NY) ‘Most Corrupt Democrat’

Charlie Rangel (D-NY) Recently received the coveted “Most Corrupt Democrat” recognition by Human Events. Rangel got caught cheating on his taxes by under reporting his net worth. These issues and more are currently before the House Ethics Committee for investigation while Rangel continues to serve as Chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. Rangel also made the Judicial Watch Ten Most Corrupt Politicians list. Rangel continues to present himself as a moral leader for the black community.

Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) – Conflict of Interest

By using her position as a member of Congress to assist a bank in which her husband was a stockholder, Rep. Waters violated House conflict-of-interest rules and engaged in conduct that does not reflect creditably upon the House. Waters did not disclose her financial ties to OneUnited Bank to Treasury officials in her letters requesting meetings between regulators and bank officials. Treasury officials claimed that although OneUnited also requested a meeting with regulators regarding Fannie and Freddie Mac losses, it wasn’t until Waters intervened that the Treasury approved a meeting.

Representative Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL) – ‘Political Corruption Crime Spree’

Jackson’s ethics issue stems from his bid to be appointed to a vacant Illinois Senate seat and subsequently, the federal investigation of former-Governor Rod Blagojevich. In the affidavit supporting the arrest of Gov. Blagojevich, the governor is quoted stating he believed a particular candidate, later identified as Rep. Jackson, would “raise money” for him and that “he might get some [money] upfront.” The governor also claimed an “emissary” from Rep. Jackson came to him and offered to raise a total of $1.5 million for his campaign should Rep. Jackson indeed be appointed to the vacant Senate seat.

Representative Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) ‘Voted to Retain Funding for ACORN’

Cleaver of Missouri’s 5th District. Kansas City’s congressman voted with 45 of his vacuous and corruption-prone colleagues to retain funding for the criminal enterprise, ACORN after the organization was exposed as encouraging tax fraud, prostitution, and sex trafficking of minors.. Emanuel Cleaver should be ashamed and the citizens of the 5th District should be outraged.

Representative James Clyburn (D-SC) ‘Payments to his brother, Charles Clyburn’

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn Believes the “Constitution Mandates” His Corrupt Behavior. In 2006 Congressman Clyburn set aside $145,000 for the Five Rivers Development Corp. Five Rivers paid $16,600 to Charles Clyburn, the brother of James Clyburn.

Representative Gregory Meeks (D-NY) ‘Failure to disclose a $40,000 loan’

A loan Meeks took out from a Queens businessman to help pay for his $830,000 house has drawn FBI scrutiny. In January 2007, Meeks borrowed $40,000 from Queens businessman Ed Ahmad. He didn’t make any payments on the loan until last month, after the FBI questioned Ahmad about the arrangement.

Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) ‘Steered scholarships to relatives’

Johnson awarded eight scholarships to her grandsons and a top aide’s children, bringing to 23 the number of awards she handed out since 2005 in violation of Congressional Black Caucus Foundation eligibility rules. “There should be outrage because there are probably students far more deserving and more needy of the funds.”

Representative Sanford Bishop (D-GA) ‘Awarded scholarships to relatives’

Melanie Sloan, director of the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said members of Congress shouldn’t need rules to know that awarding scholarship money to their families is inappropriate. “Giving scholarships to your family is clearly wrong,” Sloan said. “How could you not know better? All of their explanations and rationalizations ring hollow.”

Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) ‘Strong-arming Lobbyists’

Eleanor Holmes Norton solicits funds from lobbyists in which she improperly notes their contributions to other committee members and hints at her power to give or deny favors.

Representative John Conyers (D-GA) ‘Use of staff to baby-sit and chauffeur his children’

Representative John Conyers directed his staff to perform campaign activity on official time and in some instances used official resources, and that some staff members may have been compelled to do personal work, including baby-sitting and chauffeuring his children.
