In Defense of Gingrich and Santorum, I Did Math

Since I have been writing online, I have heard the claim made that there are more white people on food stamps than black people.

I guess this is more important than the discussion on the Constitutionality of looting any color American’s paycheck so it can be laundered, turned into an EBT card and distributed to the hungry and needy.

I bring this up because Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum have both been labeled racists for statements associating black people and food stamps.

From Yahoo News:

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich and fellow contender Rick Santorum, both heavily involved in congressional welfare reform efforts in the mid-1990s, say the government should stop promoting a welfare-like state and convert food stamp spending to block grants to states, a move that could freeze spending and cut the benefit to many who now receive it. A spokesperson for Republican Mitt Romney says the former Massachusetts governor also supports turning the nation’s food stamp program into state block grants, though he rarely mentions it.

Both Gingrich and Santorum faced criticism this week when they spoke of overhauling food stamps and other welfare programs by seeming to equate food stamp recipients and blacks. Gingrich said he would encourage blacks to demand paychecks, not food stamps, and Santorum said that he did not want to “make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money.”

The next sentence repeated the often trotted out statistic showing more white Americans collect food stamps than black Americans.

But let’s take a second look at those numbers.

There are 45 million Americans collecting food stamps. Forty-nine percent of them, or 22,050,000, are white folks. Twenty-six percent of them, or 11,700,000 are black folks.

Clearly there are close to twice as many whites as blacks.

However, according to the United States Demographics profile, the country is nearly 80 percent white. Only 12.85% of the country is black. Out of 313,232,044 people, 250,460,342 are white while 40,250,317 are black.

After crunching the numbers, we find that 8.8 percent of white America is on food stamps. Black America? 29 percent.

So, while statistically, there might be more whites than blacks collecting food stamps, when you look at the percentage of the demographics, you see a big disparity.

What does this mean?

If you are a liberal, it means I clearly hate black people. That’s fine. I don’t expect rational or logical thinking from you. Knee jerk, emotional based reactions are typical. Mathematical facts can’t be racist, though. I didn’t make these numbers up. They just are.

And I don’t point them out to make a statement about black people as a whole. I’ll leave that to people like Robert Byrd, LBJ and Roger Clinton.

I’m simply pointing out that blacks have a higher percentage of their population on food stamps, which might explain the comments by Gingrich and Santorum. While their comments might not have been politically brilliant, they are pointing to an uncomfortable fact.

It also highlights the complete failure of the left’s War on Poverty. By the way, where’s the exit strategy for that war? Oh yeah, pulling out of it is RAAAAAAACIST. Never mind the fact it has done far more harm than good.

I don’t suppose we could have that conversation about the Constitutionality of the redistribution of wealth on a federal level now, could we?
