As number of Christians Rise or Fall, So Do 100 Country’s Credit Ratings

Study finds surprising correlation between sovereign ratings and changes in Christian populations—especially evangelicals.

Should a country’s Christians-to-debt ratio be added to the list of economic indicators worth watching? Or more specifically, its evangelicals-to-debt ratio?

According to a study of more than 100 nations, changes in the percentage of Christians—especially evangelicals—in a given country have a direct correlation to economic well-being.

Dutch researcher Dick Slikker wanted to assess the Marxist theory that increases in prosperity lead to decreases in religious practice. So he examined the past decade’s worth of data from countries including the United States, Belgium, China, Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom. His research used Operation World and the World Religion Database for its data on changes in the percentage of Christians in each country, while studies from Moody’s Analytics and Fitch Ratings provided data on changes in the economic status of each country, particularly its sovereign credit rating.

His conclusion: “Changes in the percentage of Christians within a society exert a measurable correlated influence of the economic well-being of that society.”

“When using total Christian populations per country, statistically significant positive linear correlations were obtained in seven out of eight combinations of data source, rating agency and either five- or ten-year interval.” Slikker notes in his abstract.

Furthermore, within the three subsets of Christianity studied—Protestants, Catholics, and evangelicals—it was evangelicals that proved to have the highest rate of correlation with economic wellbeing.

Slikker told CT, “Four out of the four (100 percent) models for evangelicals are significant, and six out of the eight (75 percent) models for Protestants are significant.” By contrast, only 50 percent of the models for Catholics proved significant. The study also noted the correlation in a nation’s Muslim population, finding it to have no effect on the economy in all but one case, which was a negative effect.

Slikker’s study joins others that have found mixed results on whether the “Protestant work ethic” exists or not. A 2009 Harvard study found no empirical evidence of economic benefit. However, another recent study found that the effects of unemployment hurt Protestant societies more than societies that are less Protestant.

A letter to America from the Tea Party

Dear Patriot,

Barack Obama has done it again. He has gone on the attack against the Tea Party. During his speech about the non-existent negotiations regarding the partial government shutdown.
I’m not going to do it until the more extreme parts of the Republican Party stop forcing John Boehner to issue threats about our economy.

That’s right. You’re extreme. Ted Cruz is extreme. Mike Lee is extreme. Rand Paul is extreme. What makes you an extremist in the eyes of Barack Obama? You support and stand for the Constitution. How disgusting is that! The President of the United States despises those who support the Constitution.
And if Barack Obama wants to find an extremist, he need only look in the mirror. Imagine, we have a president who sought out the Marxist professors and who taught the ‘Rules for Radicals’, a book dedicated to Lucifer, tactics of Saul Alinksy! And he wants to call us radicals????
We must fight against the extreme radical Marxist Barack Obama and his minions who are determined to destroy this nation. But, we cannot do it without you. In order to win, we must match his deep pockets. We cannot afford to lose this fight. If you want freedom in America, then now is the time to stand with us.

Thank you,

Atheist Activists Trying to Get ‘In God We Trust’ Off U.S. Currency Dealt Major Blow

CBN News

Atheist activists’ crusade to have the words “In God We Trust” removed from U.S. currency was dealt a major blow this week when a U.S. district court dismissed a lawsuit brought against the Treasury Department by the Freedom From Religion Foundation and Michael Newdow, a lawyer and emergency room doctor.

Judge Harold Baer, a federal district judge in the Southern District of New York, ruled that the argument that the national motto violates the establishment clause of the First Amendment is unfounded, CBN News reported.

The American Center for Law and Justice, a conservative legal organization, submitted a brief to the court defending the motto and calling it ingrained in American history. The organization also noted that the establishment clause isn’t intended to provide the public with a pledge that it will not be exposed to religion or religious symbols.

“The national motto simply echoes the principle found in the Declaration of Independence that our freedoms come from God and not the state,” the organization said.

While the ACLJ was pleased with the end result, Newdow and the Freedom From Religion Foundation most certainly won’t be.

In March, the atheist group announced it was joining 19 other plaintiffs in challenging “In God We Trust.” The challenge was filed on Feb. 1 in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

“Our government is prohibited from endorsing one religion over another but also prohibited from endorsing religion over nonreligion,” Dan Barker with the Freedom From Religion Foundation said in a statement. “The placement of a monotheistic ideal on our nation’s currency violates this stricture and is therefore unconstitutional.”

Al-Qaeda Vows to Slaughter Christians After U.S. ‘Liberates’ Syria.

Al-Qaeda Vows to Slaughter Christians After U.S. ‘Liberates’ Syria.HT: Raymond Ibrahim.

While U.S. leaders continue pushing for war against the Syrian government, today “Al-Qaeda-linked rebels,” reports AP, “launched an assault on a regime-held Christian mountain village in the densely populated west of Syria and new clashes erupted near the capital, Damascus, on Wednesday… In the attack on the village of Maaloula, rebels commandeered a mountaintop hotel and nearby caves and shelled the community below, said a nun, speaking by phone from a convent in the village. She spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.”

Arabic news agency Al Hadath gives more information concerning this latest terror attack on Syria’s Christians, specifically how the al-Qaeda linked rebels “terrorized the Christians, threatening to be avenged on them after the triumph of the revolution.”
Thus al-Qaeda terrorists eagerly await U.S. assistance against the Syrian government, so they can subjugate if not slaughter Syria’s Christians, secularists, and non-Muslims — even as the Obama administration tries to justify war on Syria by absurdly evoking the “human rights” of Syrians on the one hand, and lying about al-Qaeda’s presence in Syria on the other.

Update:

Maaloula – a mountain village of 2,000 residents 60km northeast of Damascus – is home to some of the most ancient Orthodox Christian relics and is a major pilgrimage destination. It’s also one of the very few places in the world where people still speak Aramaic, a biblical-era language Jesus is believed to have spoken.

Following the suicide bombing, al-Nusra rebels and government forces traded fire, with the rebels eventually seizing the checkpoint and taking over a hotel on a mountain overlooking the village, according the Observatory and a local nun.

Rebels also disabled two tanks and an armored personnel carrier and killed eight regime soldiers during the fighting.

From the mountaintop hotel, rebels fired shells into the village, forcing around 80 people to take refuge in a convent, the nun said.

A Syrian government official has confirmed the attack, AP reported.

Iowa Democrat prays: Dear god, thank you for abortion

By BYRON YORK | AUGUST 31, 2013 AT 10:53 AM

With high-ranking Democratic officials listening reverently in the Iowa state capitol, a liberal activist and union official on Wednesday led a prayer for increased funding for abortions, for greater access to abortions, for doctors who perform abortions, and for what she called “the blessing of choice.”

Midge Slater, an organizer for the Iowa Alliance for Retired Americans, part of the Iowa Federation of Labor and the AFL-CIO, spoke to about 80 people who came to the capitol to protest a proposal that the State Board of Medicine end a program that allows doctors to prescribe an abortion pill for a woman after a video chat, rather than an in-person consultation.

Two days later, on Friday, the Board voted to end the practice known as “tele-med” abortions.

In her invocation at the rally, which was attended by Jack Hatch and Tyler Olson, two Democratic candidates for governor of Iowa, Slater prayed that elected officials “may always support a woman’s right to make her own medical decisions.” She prayed for “increased financial support for low income women” to have abortions. She prayed that “women in developing nations” have greater access to abortion. She prayed to “give thanks and celebrate that abortion is still safe and legal.” And she prayed that families may know “the blessing of choice.”

Slater also prayed for “women have been made afraid of their own power by their paternalistic religion.” And she asked God that women be able to “throw away their secrets and claim their herstories.”
